Do you plant side by side or back to back ?

Just wondering what you folks do when planting two clematis on a free standing trellis. The trellis is not very wide and I have a clematis that has been growing for a couple years but I think she needs a companion.

It would depend on the situation for me. I have both. A lot of mine are against fences or similar and must be side to side.

if the trellis is free standing it doesn't really matter much but try your best not to disturb the roots of the 2yr old which ever side you choose
