huernia schneideriana seeds

Desirai(7B)August 19, 2014

Hey im on my kindle I probably spelled it wrong. It is AKA red dragon flower.

Mine is loaded with flowers but what do the seed pods look like I cant find pictures on google. I would love to get seeds off it. But not sure if I have seed pods or unopened flowers.

Since Huernias are in the Asclepiadaceae(Milkweed family) their seeds are contained inside a typical milkweed pod. The pods burst open and the seeds are wind distributed by fluffy "tails" (known scientifically as a pappus) attached to each seed. Since they are pollinated by flies, I suspect what you are seeing are unopened flowers.

You could pollenate them yourself. Use a artist paint brush and keep dabble inside the flowers every few hours while they are open. In the next few days, you should see that the old flower is not dropping off but changing. I havn't see a seed pod on any of mine but still trying.
