What kind of cactus to start with?

deva33 Z5 SE IowaAugust 4, 2014

Hi! I have had success with succulents and herbs so far but I think it is time to get a cactus (or two) and I'm wondering if you have any suggestions for one that will be good for a beginner and will flower.

Also, I assume that cactus prefer soil that is 100% grit. Would that be accurate? I keep my succulents in 1/3 cactus mix, 1/3 perlite, and 1/3 lava rock. What do you suggest for cactus? And please keep in mind that Lowes is pretty much my only soil/grit source where I'm at (rural Iowa).

I would go with a Mammillaria species. Easy to care for, flowers really good, and will do well in your area.

I would say that your succulent mix would be ok for cacti as well. Check out any feed stores nearby and look for poultry grit, sometimes called cherry stone. It can be used just like the lava rock, but is already in small pieces.

Thanks Stoney. I will see what I can find.

And Nancy - you may have just changed my world!!! When I repotted everything recently I had to sit outside in the hot sun for hours hammering lava rock into small pieces!
