What Happened to Clematis?

jessisokJune 12, 2011

Hi everyone,

I have a Vyvyan Pennell/Celtic Skies clematis. This is its second growing season. It was happily climbing up my trellis and then one day, the leaves up top were just black and wilted. The bottom of the plant looks good--still green and growing, but the upper part looks terrible. Any idea what could have happened? Also, should I cut the blackened part back to see if it re-grows?

I should also add--this is my first post here on the GardenWeb Forums, and my first time trying to grow a clematis.

Thanks a bunch for any help you can offer!

Sometimes the top growth out grows the roots and dies back.

Cut off all the dead stuff.

This is a common problem and it will outgrow it.

Clematis like lots of water and a nice organic fertilizer like Rose Tone or composted manure.

Thank you so much for your help! I'll find a good fertilizer and get it on there.

Thanks again,
