Trimming sucker growth from meyer lemon

arkberry(8b)May 6, 2012

I have a Meyer that has a sucker branch growing about a foot from the soil line and about two feet from the rest of the canopy. I want to remove it because it will add nothing to the shape of the tree and just looks bad. It is about six inches long. Is there any reason that I should not remove it? Tree is fruiting a looks healthy.

If I trim it, would it be a good candidate for a rooted cutting.

The branch MUST be removed if it is BELOW the graft line. Check the shape of the leaves.

If it is removed it will be better to rub it off than to cut it off, since it will not regrow back as readily. And don't delay!

Rooted cuttings need to be from older (striated) wood.

Even if it's above the graft, it won't harm the tree to remove it.
