Broken Christmas Cactus

dspec8151September 6, 2009

I have a christmas cactus that is about 40 years old. It has base branches that are about 1" to 1 1/2" around. I have noticed that two of the branches have broken and are limp. The cactus is otherwise healthy and the leaves on the broken branches are still green and healthy looking. Is there any way to mend or save these broken branches, or do I need to remove them and repot them seperate. Thanks for your help.

David, I grow a lot of differant holiday cactus and I don't know of any way to mend a broken stem but you can take it off before it dries out any more and pot it up seperatly.
They usually root really easily especially the christmas cactus. Just go lightly on the water.

It sounds like you have a treasure there, I'd love to see a picture if you have one.

Good Luck!

Hi, David!
I have a 30 year-old Christmas Cactus with nice woody branches, as well.
Last year, I pruned the CC for the first time and ended up with many cuttings.
One of the cuttings was a woody branch. This cutting took the longest to root,
and it lost the most leaf-segments during that time. Part of it rotted, as well.

So, my advice would be to root only green, vigorious tip-cuttings - no more than
five or six inches long. I put three cuttings to a pot, and I position them nearly
vertical so that the resulting plant has a more tree-like trunk. You should see
back-budding as soon as you remove the broken sections.
