Propagating clematis from roots

NVL4July 10, 2014

Hi -Another question, I was driving and saw what looks like a clematis ( looks passion flowery -with the purple frill) growing wild on the side of the road. It must have escaped from someone's yard. I fought the urge to jump out in traffic and grab some, but I do plan on swinging back by and clipping some. Do clematis root well? Do they root best in water or in soil? I may be lucky enough to be able to dig a little section up with a spade, but possibly not. Should I clip a piece of the vine that is blooming or an area that has new green leaves or older vine? Any other advice besides to not get myself run over. No worries, BTW, it,a very accessible.

I've never had any luck propagating from cuttings, but some others have - I think it takes a long time. I've toyed with the idea of digging a piece of the root of Rooguchi to try to get another one, but am afraid to try it because I don't want to kill the mother plant, so if you do dig up a piece of this and it works, please post to let us know. Are you sure it's a wild clematis, though? I've never seen that around here.

I am no expert but I am trying to do this right now as well so I will share what I have learned so far! I believe new wood is what you'd want to clip from what I've read. If you clip a piece w/ a bloom I'd cut everything off except the top two leaves. That's what I was instructed to do with mine. I have a rooguchi cutting in soil and I keep the soil moist and so far it is still alive. I think it's been at least two weeks now and it's not dead yet.

I'd say give it a shot! What do you have to lose? Would love to see a picture of it before you cut the bloom off. And don't get run over! :o)

I am 99% sure. I will tKe some pictures before I cut into it. It is growing between the road and some railroad tracks, near the stop/ intersection. I was thinking maybe it was in a garbage truck because it was "dead" and fell off of the truck. It's also kind of near(ish) the Lowe's maybe the handy work if some birds or somehow fell out if some one's vehicle as they turned? Who knows. I hope it's a clematis. It has the same leaves as my Nelly Moser.

Based on these posts, I will cut some of the vine that is blooming and try to get some roots from the outside section.

Well, a shoutout to the 1%. It is " Passiflora Incarnata" aka Passion flower but it appears as a wildflower here in my area and the info doesn't say anything about it being a clematis. However, I think I am going to get a bit if it and grow it. It is a decent nectar source.

Passion flowers are not clematis

FYI for Rooguchi and others in the Integrifolia group, they divide very well in the early spring.
