clematis id

zeak(6b)July 16, 2014

Hi there. The house we moved into has 2 great clematis plants on a fence arbor and lightpost. I want to ID them so I can trim them appropriately. I thought they might be the jackmanii variety but am not sure. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

This doesn't look like Jackmanii to me - wide petals and too many of them along with the large light central boss of stamens. Is this blooming now? If so, it's probably a type 3 prune, hard prune to a few buds in late winter.

You may find the variety using the search form on Clematis on the Web. Fill in as much as you know and leave the rest blank.

Could be Wisley like one I have. Is flower blue or more mauve? My color setting or yours makes a big difference. Your color photo looks bright blue to me. Or is it me? Must be a wonderful display across a fence. Got a pic? I'd love to see it!
