different leaves on clematis

dragonfly_field(8)August 10, 2014

This is my pink champagne clematis. I've only had it a few months and it's young and hasn't bloomed yet. I put it in a large pot with good soil and rose fertilizer and it now is producing two different kinds of leaves on its new growth. All the old leaves are single. Some new ones are single as you can seen two of them here but most new leaves are this three way cut leaf. Is this normal?

These are some old leaves. The kind I always see on clematis of this group. I am new to owning clematis though so please let me know if the hat is normal for this type or not.

Nice observation, but I think some variation can occur normally. I've noticed these multilobed leaves in seedlings a lot. The leaves are actually attractive and look healthy. Could be a good thing.
