When do I cut back my clematis?

gardenbug(8b)September 3, 2010

I am in zone 8, British Columbia.

Can someone please tell me when the best time would be for me to cut my Jackmanii back? Currently, I see a few new blooms on it, near the top.

I also have Jackmanii Superba which is in full bloom right now. I am getting conflicting information. From it's best to prune in spring or late winter to immediately after it blooms.

Also, how short do I cut it back? Thanks everyone!

I would cut them both back to a foot tall in late winter/early spring.

You can cut them back by a third or so when they finish blooming to try to get another flush of bloom if you want to.

buyorsell...thank you!

I will just leave the vines there until late winter/early spring. Can you please tell me where on the vine, I should make my cut? Thx.

Cut about a foot from the ground, immediately above the buds.

I whack my type IIIs off at six inches because I prefer new growth up from the ground rather than from last years vines but most won't cut that severely. It is up to you. You can start at the ground and go up to the closest set of buds and cut just above them.
