My first clematis!

stu2900September 10, 2010

I planted a Jackmanii clematis this year and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I've read I should cut it back to 1' or so in late February or early March, but I have a question. When I bought the plant it was wrapped all around this little wire trellis that was stuck in the pot. I carefully removed the plant (trellis and all) and planted it and it's done very well this year, but when I cut it back how do I handle that little trellis? Do I just leave it and cut the vine above it? The vine is wrapped quite a lot around it.

Just ignore the little trellis. It serves no practical function outside the pot the clematis came in. Besides, you will need a much larger trellis for Jackmania to grow on since it will get--what?---6-8 ft long, maybe longer.

When you cut it back, remove the little trellis which is only for that pot not your garden. You will need a much bigger trellis.
