Tree trimmed too much?

AnshuCJuly 30, 2012

I asked my former Gardner to trim my lemon tree and he butchered it :( Now I'm wondering, when the lemons will grow back. He basically cut off the whole top of it and there are new leaves growing but no site of flowering or lemons. Will I have to wait a whole year? So sad, I love lemons.

Isn't it too late in the year to start flowering anyway.

First, tell us what kind of lemon it is. If it is a Meyer, you can probably give it a good shot of fertilizer and expect to get some blooms in Aug-Sept. The primary bloom period in California is in the Spring; but my mature garden Meyers tend to bloom most of the year and always have fruit.

I'm actually not sure what time of lemon tree it is. It had large thick lemons when it did have lemons.

Also, which fertilizer should I give?

There are many on the market, Anshu. Just pick a good quality citrus fertilizer that contains micronutrients. I live in California, and I like to use Gro Power Citrus & Avocado Food. It has the right ratio of NPK as well as the correct amount of micronutrients here in S. Calif as well as quite a bit of humic acid. But, there are several other good choices. Just go to your best gardening center, one that carries citrus, and ask what they carry. You should fertilize every 2 to 3 months, and fertilize between January/February and October.
