Clematis staining painted posts

trailflower(8)November 23, 2013

I have two clems that have been dropping something which is staining the painted porch and trellis with tiny brown bits. They are tiny, pin-prick size, but there are plenty as you can see in the image. I tried scrubbing them off and nothing happens. Any idea? Previous clems I've had against fences and never had this happen.

Wonder if that's from a fungus instead -- called artillery fungus.
It's very small. Develops on woody mulch.
