2 Stems From 1 Lemon Seed

neo668July 21, 2010

I'm trying to grow a lemon tree from seeds. I planted a few seeds and they are beginning to germinate. But on a couple of seeds there are 2 stems emerging. I read somewhere that a lemon tree should be trained to one stem (whatever that means). Will I have to get rid of one stem or should I just leave them alone? If I have to get rid of one stem how do I know which stem to remove and which remains? And how do I do this? I would love to let them live as they are but I am worried of limited real estate if 2 stems (trees) are going to share one pot.

Thank you all.

... I was going to post a topic on this very subject. Is it one seedling with two stems? Or is it two separate trees? My lemon seedling is what appears to be two trees on one root system. I pulled the seedlings up by their roots so I could seperate them, but only found one root system. Hmm.

I've got 2 such twin seedlings. I cut off one stem from one of these 2 to see what happens.

The 3-stem seedling I mentioned above is now growing a 4th stem. Interesting. But is this good or bad? Somebody please advise.

As it wasn't growing as fast as the other single-stem seedlings I cut off 2 stems, leaving 2 stems. Lets see if it will grow faster now.
