HELP! Ferns with frostbite?

jenrochesterFebruary 17, 2008

We bought a house in the coastal area of SC back in August. Along with the house, came 5 HUGE, beautiful ferns (Boston, I think?). The old owners said that when it got cold out they would put them in the garage at night and bring them back outside in the morning and hang on the porch. That's what my husband and I have been doing, but I think some of the fronds got frostbite because they turned a blueish purple color and died. Below are some photos.

Before photo (August 07)

After photos (February 08)

Front (side facing most of the sunlight)

Back side (doesn't get as much sun)

I'm not sure what to do from here. Should I trim the dead fronds off? Put them inside and keep them there? I generally is around 60 degrees here in the daytime.

If anyone can give us any recommendations, we would greatly appreciate it. We love these ferns and want to try to keep them beautiful, but just don't know what to do from here. Thanks so much!

When my potted woodwardia gets frost-bite (snow-burn, as well), I simply wait until new fronds start uncurling in the spring and then I prune out the black, brown, purplish dead/dying fronds. Eventually, all the old fronds are cut away.
