What to plant under Tree Ferns

mariahswind(z10 Tasmania)May 22, 2014

I have a couple of well established tree ferns I'd like to plant something under. What would work well?

At my parents place I planted Cymbidium orchids under their tree ferns (Dickensonia antarctica). But I raised the ground level with bark chips by about 25 cms and planted them into that. They flower well and the weak levels of fertilisers for orchids hasn't adversely affected the tree ferns.

Hi
that sounds like a fantastic idea for your climate Would certainly be showy group!!
I started a TF bed a couple of years ago and I'm experimenting with other types of ferns Intend to add some epidendrum and epicatt orchids when I get some trunks i planted some Brazilian types which don't get as large as australian . Also have an elephant fern in there lol (Angiopteris evecta ) got it on a whim at a show . Was in a 4 inch pot and has almost doubled in size but a long way to go Please tell us what you plant might steal some of your ideas lol good luck gary
