Need help with planting bareroot ferns

gardenfanatic(MO zone5b)June 8, 2014

I got some fern roots at Walmart, and I can't make heads or tails of them. I don't even know if they're still alive. I know I'm not supposed to bury the crown, but if I don't know which way is up on these, much less what the crown is, how can I plant them? I'm wondering if I should just throw them away since I'm obviously not going to plant them right, and I suspect they're dead anyway...

Help please!

Photos would help. But meantime give them a bit of a soak and then just keep them damp.
