Flower pricing for florists....

gardengirl77January 11, 2012

I was wondering how some of you decide your flower prices when you sell to florists. Do you go off of the USDA web site....or do you make up your own price per bunch?

I do use the USDA site to HELP me decide my base pricing. Also involved in the decision is how rare or dificult it is to grow the product. Is it in season right now ?; meaning, is there a glut on the market. One needs to pay attention to the quantity involved in the bunches as quoted by the USDA. Are the bunches in 10' or 15's, etc.

While using the USDA as a guide, it's soooo important to emphasize that your flowers are fresh, fresh, fresh. Say that you will replace any that do not last a week and do it with a smile. They haven't been shipped half way around the world. They were growing this morning. Locally grown is huge in my area. I've also asked what they're paying wholesale, but usually, I ask someone other than the store owner. Don't underprice the USDA prices. Usually, I sell by the dozen - a baker's dozen. If I'm trying something new, I give them a bunch to try.

If you can get into a local flower market to look around that is helpful. Are you selling straight bunches to florists? I know some growers just do $6.00/bunch straight so there is no confusion. Somethings can be a little more and by the stem such as .75 stem asiatic lilies or glads. There is a grower I know of that sells the Nordstrom of flowers therefore if you know your flowers are the best then ask the price. If they want quality then they need to pay for it.
