You've been very busy Dax, but everything looks great. Now let's hope the Weimar doesn't decide to use your conifers for a fire hydrant. :)

Think it's time for most of to get out and tidy up.

Nice collection of conifers and deciduous material.

Looking at the big picture you got a lot going on and have planted a lot of plants.

How many species and cultivars do you think you have planted?

Seems like you told me awhile back you and mom were looking at another piece of property.

Is that still in the works?

Hi Cher, he's fast as a bullet and plows into trees (and pee's when I'm not looking I "tink")

Hi Dave, a quick calculation says I have 380 plantings of which combined conifer seedlings (80) and ~20 deciduous trees including an orchard and the rest are cultivars of conifers.

I'm staying here Dave. I didn't care for the area I was looking for land at. It wasn't half as attractive as where I am.

And I agree, it's time to plant, it's time to prune, it's spring!

Dax,

Thanks for the update! I would think it'd be tough to leave a place you have so much time and effort invested in. I love your place and the new pup. I have a Saint Bernard/hound mix that been known to bump into a tree or two when she gets wound up, lol.

It's going to be great to see these trees grow over time. While I love the manicured conifer gardens many post, it's not a look I'm likely to achieve here at my place. I appreciate seeing a more open, rough and tumble space. I'm enjoying watching the progression and it inspires me. Thanks for sharing, Dax!

Thanks!

I like the Pinus densiflora 'Golden Ghost' too!

I gotta give it up to you, Dax! Thanks for recommending Thuja occidentalis 'Hetz Wintergreen' in several posts over the years and including pics. It's how I found GardenWeb a few years back. That wet snow we got (sheesh, just a few weeks ago, right?) bent them over for a short time, but they popped right back up. And they stayed a nice, dark green all winter. Exactly what I wanted and needed for my yard.

First a few more from today after I tended a raging fire all afternoon:

Pinus koraiensis 'Avocadra'

Abies balsamea 'Weeping Larry' - gift from Dave

Pinus mugo 'Alpen Hexe' - grafted about 5-years ago.

Picea abies 'Sherrie' - named for me mum.

Pinus resinosa

Pinus mugo 'Minima Kalous' - grafted about 5-years ago.

Pinus banksiana 'Compacta' - grafted about 5-years ago.

Pinus contorta var. latifolia 'Asher' - grafted about 5-years ago.

Ken, lol, yes, Golden Ghost was done buy "one" genius, however I cannot give you the credit as well to Pinus reflexa 'Extra Blue'.

Yeeep, taxo & Edwin: it's my seedling selection. The ortet tree when it perished was 25' tall and 5' wide at the base. It's a perfect, narrow, pyramidal-form. I suppose sleek is a good word to describe it. 'Derksen' is the last name of the guy in Minnesota that purchased the seedling & later he sent a rooted-cutting, to me.

GrapeSocks, Rick, Nater, thanks you guys.

Dax,

20 the 25 Juniperus scopulorum I planted last year year made it. I have 5 replacements coming. I also planted 25 Pinus edulis and all perished. I don't know if it was too much or too little water, but I have another 30 coming next month. We had a crazy April last year, got 4 inches of precip over a week or so. We average 13 inches a year, so that was a lot all at once.

The seedlings I get are about 6 inches tall and could probably use more care and protection than I give them. I don't screen or stake them, just plant them and check moisture levels once a week or so. I'm going to try planting half of the pinons higher than last year. The other half I'm going to grow out in Tapla's gritty mix and see if getting some more size on them before planting out helps.

I have 5 Juniperus monosperma coming. I know they're not pretty, but they're tough!

I also have Pinus nigra, Abies concolor, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Juniperus horizontalis, 5 of each and 10 Abies lasiocarpa coming at the end of the month.

For the pretties from forestfarm, I ordered a Larix decidua (kaempferi? I know this dicussion's been had) 'Pendula', Picea omorika, Picea pungens glauca 'Pendula' and a Pinus koraiensis. I think that's enough latin for me tonight and I look forward to the corrections I'm sure to need, lol!

So much for taking it easy on the plantings this year.

Love your Golden Ghost!

Dax, don't be surprised of your 'Avocadra' will show some needle burn in the next couple of days...it will have noting to do with a sun issue ;0)

Barb,

You're going to be busy but, it's always worth it. Each tree or shrub or anything I/you plant is always one I'm glad I did.
Better luck this time around.

'Avocadra', it is a sexy beast. Now to wait as Edwin states. I won't be surprised if it sustains burn. The smoke and heat pretty much went directly to it.

Best Regards,

Dax

Dax, Seeing your conifer photos, as well as your grafting set-up is always enjoyable. Also, coming from a small waterfront community where our houses are on top of each other, its also way cool to see such an awesome expansive property.

Dax, Great looking plants you have there. What a nice spread. Isn't it nice to be out in the country and just enjoy all that land and nature.

I would love to see a photo of your Taxodium distichum 'Mickelson' this summer once it breaks bud.

Thanks for sharing the photos.

That Pinus resinosa is a beautiful tree!
Is someone here familiar with a variegated type of this species?

Lady, I wouldn't trade the lifestyle for city life for anything. I'm lucky to be here the way I see things.
I have (8) 'Mickelson' Taxodium. Is this what you wish to see or did you intend to say my Dawn Redwood 'Derksen'?

Edwin, never heard of a variegated resinosa.

20 acres - made me take a gulp of my coffee. You have it going on girl! That's incredibly awesome.

Forsythia in bloom, green showing thru the flower buds of my Viburnum burejaeticum, most of the trees are swelling, my Acer rubrum 'Red Rocket' is in full flower, it's not going to be long.

Happy Spring everyone.
