I was hiking (outside of NYC) and came across this moss(?).
I googled "red moss" and the only results I found were a red moss that is indigenous to Scotland.
Are these eggs or something else?
They look like salmon eggs to me.
I thought they looked like some type of egg too.
Probably a fungus
Found it!! Fuligo septica thrives on damp dead wood and is commonly referred to as dog vomit fungus. Despite the name, I find it beautiful.
It's not the very common 'dog vomit ' slime mold.....which you would probably not find so beautiful. This is Tubifera ferruginosa, another species (of slime mold) entirely.
Slime molds are fascinating things.....not a mold, not a fungus, but something called a myxomycete. This one is Tuberifera ferruginosa.
