Easiest large yellows to grow?

toronado3800 Zone 6 StLouis(6)April 2, 2014

After reading the excellent posts on burning skylands and seeing the Pinus strobus 'Louie', what do you all think are best of the reasonably fast growing yellows to grow?

FWIW, Metasequoia 'Ogon' grows like a weed for me. Mine needed only a little staking and is probably free range now with the exception of some bells I hung on it to keep the deer from getting too comfy this winter.

My skylands is struggling. Seems it burnt two summers ago and last winter. I LOVE the large ones I have seen here and in person but maybe I need a plant that likes my lack of care lol.

I'll second that Picea omorika. I've heard it loses its yellow intensity with age though.

Picea abies 'Elegantissima' is another one but its more of a whitish frosting on the needles.

I have a 3 year old if you want it. Just email me.

Wates Golden VA pine here is 22' after 10 seasons. 2.5' or more in best growing seasons -- a bit less last season. The bigger it gets the more impressive it is. Looks like it has a Scots pine rootstock.
