Strange knobby sprouts on dahlia tubers

steve22802(7a VA)February 12, 2013

I just took a clump of Sky Angel dahlia tubers out of storage and they have strange looking knobby sprouts coming out. These tubers were stored in a 5 gallon bucket filled with regular garden soil and then located in my cold (but not freezing) garage. This storage method usually works very well for me. Does anyone have any ideas what might causes this strange deformed growth?

They are very brittle new growth sprouts.

Crown gall is caused by a bacteria. Very infectious to other dahlias. Toss it.

Thanks for identifying this Ted, I sure don't want to spread it to the rest of my collection.
