Are they the same species?

hankeatNovember 20, 2012

I bought these two cactus from a home improvement store. The one in small pot on the right has a tag. It is a Pseudo epostoa melanostele. But the one in big pot on the left has no tag. I wonder they are the same species. The one in small pot seems to have fuller hairs than the other one.

I hope someone can help me to identify the one in big pot. Thanks in advance.

They look the same to me. Thickness of hair could be natural variation or environmental difference in soil and light of the growing conditions. Hard to say.

And are those really Espostoas? They don't look right to me. (Pseudo)Espostoa melanastele is a valid species, but those look more like Oreocereus.

Oreocereus usually have larger thicker needles sticking through the fluff.

And Espostoas have crinkly, rough wooly surfaces with small spines, not at all like the wooly mammoths pictures above.
