Skipping dormant bulb for one season

bibitteApril 29, 2008

Hello all.

I am just wondering if I can leave Dahlia bulbs dormant in my garage this summer for one season? I will be changing houses during that time and I don't feel like coming back to the old house (and new owner) to dig out my bulbs.

Thanks.

Unless the temp in your garage is 45ish all summer, they wouldn't stay dormant. I would see if a friend has the space in their garden to keep them for the season.

If you have a lot of bulbs, you might consider buying an old fridge, say one where the freezer no longer works. Then just turn the temperature up to above 40 and keep them in there. They can often be found for $50. Granted, they'll use more electricity than a new one.

Cheers,
Russ

Have you considered growing them in pots? They may not bloom as well as they would in the ground, but at least you'd keep them alive and then you could move them with you.
