Underplanting/interplanting tulips with glads

backyardgrown(7b-8 NW MS)September 28, 2009

In an effort to maximize my bed space, I wondered if planting tulips on top of and in between my glads would work. I live in an area where glads don't have to be lifted. I have three "seasons" of tulips, meaning that I have some that will be early, some mid-season and some late.

Do you think the early tulips would do well planted with the glads? I won't need to lift the glads until I have to divide them, so I think this would work really well as long as everyone gets fed properly. Ideas?

I don't see why you couldn't do this. I would try to plant in between instead of above your tulips - to avoid damaging your tulips when digging up the glads. I have to lift glads every year, so by the time I get them in the ground, the tulips are long gone. Not sure how the timing would work with your bulbs - but give it a try! You can always move the glads if it doesn't work out.
