Grafting Meyer onto Eureka.

newgen(9 Central California)October 19, 2012

I have a healthy inground Eureka that is about 15' talland yields great production. Would like to get a Meyer and graft it to the Eureka. I have never done any grafting before. Any pros and cons to doing this? Is it hard to do?

i for one have never grafted anything so obviously my advice is not gold. I would say that this sounds like a cool plan and should be just fine. From what i do know about grafting is the actual process isnt that hard at all. Being sure you get the cambium layers together is the key to getting a graft to take.

there is a guy that has like 50+ varieties grafted to one rootstock tree. It quite amazing really.

Grand idea, and a great way to get two different kinds of lemons on one tree. Rootstock will be find for the Meyer, since lemon rootstocks perform well for both Eureka and Meyer lemons. And, that would be Joe Real who has this tree that Mike is speaking of. I believe at last count it was 81 to 1!!

Haven't seen him around on the forums much, lately. He is truly a fruit growing master, especially with citrus. Mrtexas top works his trees all the time. If you go to YouTube, there are some great citrus grafting videos to watch.
