What to do w/Dinner Plate Dahlia? Free w/order

mehearty(So ME z5a)June 21, 2006

Park Seed was unable to send the desmond dianthus plants I ordered (boo hoo hoo hoo), so they're sending me these dinner plate dahlias. I looked them up on their website, and they say the're free w/every order (see link if you're interested).

I have no idea what to do w/them in my zone. They seem pretty fussy. Can I plant them in pots so I don't have to dig them up?

Thank you,

I have several dinnerplate dahlias in pots. They do well there. However, in the winter, you will still need to take them in and prepare them for a nice winter's rest. Check out the forum for lots of ideas about that.

Oh, hi, mehearty. You beat me to it. I'm wondering just how many flowers we're going to see on these plants, given the very late planting. At least I assume it's late. I haven't grown dahlias in years. Beautiful flowers, though.

The Parks link isn't helpful anymore. What did they say about the dahlia collection, do you remember?

BTW, my William Baffin arrived...large but in questionable health. I posted in Roses. We shall see...

I just planted mine. Took advantage of posts from the old garden fence (that is no more). The flowers may be a moot question because at least one of mine was in an alarming number of pieces. Can't look a gift horse in the mouth...

I wonder if you received the same ones. I got

Lavender Perfection (now more like Lavender Crumble)
Barbarossa (red)
Glory Van Heemstede (yellow, and I hope I spelled it right)

I got the same bonus. Planted them yesterday. You spelled them correctly.
