Whats wrong? Dahlia rotting from top down...

homemommyJune 17, 2010

I have grown several plants from tubers this year, most are doing wonderfully, but one seems really sick. I noticed tonight that the top of the plant, was dying back, wilting and shriveling up. But most of the plant is very healthy, just the top couple sets of leaves. I pinched them off, and the stem is rotting, soggy, gooey and all this brown liquid in it!! I pinched off more, and I fear that all the stem is like this, and the whole plant is going to die!!!

What am I dealing with??

I had the same thing happen.

We had about 2 weeks of rain and one of mine did the same thing. I pinched out the yuck-ness and have been keeping an eye on it. I dont want to pinch too far down to encourage rot in the hollow stem or disease in the stem.
It is sending out new baby leaves now, I think it will recover with some sun and less rain!
