Your favorite not-so-pokey cactus???

Sirron(5)December 10, 2013

I've been avoiding the cactus section of the nursery for the past several years because I hate getting poked to death. But recently I've discovered a few not so pokey varieties and I was wondering if anyone else has a favorite soft spined or flat spined cactus.

So far I've gathered:
Lobivia famatimensis
Rebutia muscula
Rebutia albipilosa
Rebutia pygmaea v deirsiana
Mammilaria duwei
Mammiliaria saboe v haudeana
Mammillaria plumosa
Copiapoa tenuissina

And a picture of m plumosa in bloom just for good measure :)

Are you just looking for 'proper' cacti?

What about 'imposters' like Stapelia? Huernia?

Probably my favorites of all the Ariocarpi... no spines at all.

another favorite is Astrophytum myriostigma. None of the Astrophytums are super pokey.. even those with a lot of spines tend to fold their spines inward. Anyway, several of these species have no spines whatsoever... nice

lzrddr:

Simply amazing cacti you have there. The Pachycereus schottii monstrose is incredible. It looks like a green monster. Thanks for the wonderful photos.

LOVE that Pachycereus schottii monstrose, Geoff!
And the photo angle amused me -- looks like one of those "pro" wrestlers holding up his arms. heh

As well as the ones already mentioned, other cryptic and spineless cacti which are minutely enjoyable are Aztekium (I heard a 3rd one was found) and Yavia.

Geoff,

Great pictures, thanks for posting them. That's such a sweet collection of 'carpus displayed.

A spikey Astrophytum is Astrophytum ornatum!

My favorite spinless cactus would have to be Aztekium hintonii.
I`ll try to get a pic of mine for you guys later!
