Sunny in the summer, Full shade in winter

Asante71April 27, 2013

Hi, this is my first posting, but I love this forum - have gotten lots of good information.

I have a problem area and would love some suggestions: Looking for perennial flowering plants for a raised bed on the south side of my yard - I recently pulled out a tangerine and avocado tree because they weren't getting enough sun, and the fruit wasn't ripening until March or later. During the summer it is in full sun, but because of the wood fence and shadow of the neighbor's house, from October to March it's in full shade - maybe an hour of late afternoon sun. I like bright colored flowers and interesting foliage. My soil is pretty heavy clay, but it's had lots of garden soil mixed into it.
Any suggestions?

Summer flowering bulbs/ tubers. Asiatic Lilies are dormant in winter so need no light. They will get going just as the sun is coming round. That would be my no.1 choice in Zone 10. Good luck. Ian.

Trumpet Vine. It doesn't get it's foliage until summer and dies back before October. It grows fine in clay.

Almost any herbacious plant that dies back in Fall.
