Rethinking stance on Fall clean up
I've often said here that I wait until Spring to do my clean up of the gardens, that is cutting back spent stalks and general maint.. Because besides being burned out by Oct. I enjoy the snow covered foliage and the snow protection and maybe seed heads for birds.
Well last Fall I wrote that I was going to do the opposite and with my last bit of energy try doing all the work then. I did, and I must say it is pretty nice to not face that chore today. And as far as the plants, it seems they came through ok. All I had to do this morning was rake some fallen leaves (not the leaf mulch) out of the pathways and corners. Late daylilys still have old foliage to be cut off but for the most part I'm ready for the season in regards to clean up.
Don't get me wrong, I still like to see a winter garden, but maybe the older I get the better I can see the advantage of less work in the Spring.
