A convert to daylilies

ifraser25(z11 Brazil)May 3, 2012

I've never grown daylilies before, but they are extremely popular around here so I thought, go with the flow... Any advice on planting? Our soil is basically clay-loam, fine when wet but bakes to hard brick in dry weather.

Hello. Welcome to the wonderful world of daylilies. They are very resilient plants, they will tolerate a lot, drought, heavy soils, etc. I know because I have heavy clay and my daylilies are doing fine. Just make sure they have enough sun. I use aged straw for a mulch because that's what I have access to. I water the plants before I put the mulch down and that keeps the soil around them moderately wet. The straw also keeps the winds from drying it out to much. Be sure and post some pictures of your daylilies when you get started. I'm sure this will become an obsession with you as it has for me. Good luck. Marg
