Swedish Columnar Aspens in Part Shade?

lilies_and_roses(1a)April 19, 2009

We are thinking of planting a privacy hedge of Swedish Columnar Aspens along the back fence in our back garden. I've read that they should only be grown in full sun, and although our back garden is south facing and very sunny, there is a large stretch of shade in front of the fence cast by the neighbors house that is only about 4 feet from the fence. Has anyone grown these trees in part shade? Once they grow above the fence line, anything above that will be in full sun, but the lowest 6-7 feet of the trees will always be shaded. Does anyone think this will work? Thanks!

My bet would be that it would be fine. I suppose it's possible that the bottom shaded part wouldn't be as full as if in full sun, but I bet you won't notice a difference, as most of the tree will be in sun so I think overall the health of the trees should be excellent, and that will carry over into the shaded area.
