Help! Surprise frost.

Violetjune Zone 3May 17, 2013

Hello all,
We just moved into a new house and we put in our first garden in this city this week. I planted all sorts of tomatoes and was really pleased with myself for getting it all done. Well, it turns out that surprise frosts are more common in this city than I realized... the forecast said a low of 5 or so and I woke up this morning to frost on the neighbours' roofs. There also appeared to be some frost on our patio. It rained yesterday evening, so most of the plants and grass were wet. I did go out right away and spray some water on all the tender plants.

Did I do the right thing? Will they all die? Is there anything else I can do to save them???

Some tomato varieties can take a bit of frost. Although they are not noted to be frost hardy I have had some take numerous frosts in a year. Whats done is done, you will know what survived when it warms up today. I get scared and cover or move plants inside if it calls for anything colder than 6 in the spring.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.
