dividing calamagrostis

I have a friend who is looking for hardy grasses. I recommended Karl Foerster calamagrostis. Her next question was where to get some.

I have a clump which doesn't 'need' dividing yet, but I was wondering if I could just slice off a piece for her without disturbing the clump. Would that work?

Everything I've read about dividing says to dig up the entire clump to divide. I don't want to do that unless I have to.

Thanks for your help.

That works for daylilies so I would expect it works ok for Karl as well. Use a very sharp spade and cut a pie-shaped wedge out for your friend. I can understand you not wanting to dig out the whole clump!

Yes, do as Debbie says and it'll work just fine :)

Okay, thanks, I'll do that. I received a transplanting shovel for my birthday, and it will probably be perfect for the job.

Just an update on my division.
Maybe I'm just feeble, but I found I couldn't penetrate the mass of roots and ended up digging up the whole clump. It popped out easily. Then I used my pruning saw and cut the clump up into sections. All the divisions seem to be doing okay.
