5' potted Celeste whip - prune it to 3' ?

Hello fig forum,

A week ago, I planted in our garden a potted Celeste fig in Long Island, NY bought from Hick's Nursery - beautiful plant. It is five feet tall with two whip branches (about 3/4 diameter) nicely spaced. I have been reading and going in circles about whether or not to cut it in half (maybe use the top to start some more). I read that you are not supposed to cut celeste back but the instructions are not clear, so I come to you all for guidance. Thanks for your help.

There is no right or wrong way.

If you want it to grow in a tree form don't cut it.

If you want to grow it in a bush form cut it off somewhere between 18-36".

If you want a short tree form just cut the top bud off to encourage branching. Then in the Fall cut off the lowest branches to prevent it from growing into a bush.

I agree. Fig trees, when established, are pretty tough. So this is mostly a matter of preference.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will cut it back, root the cuttings and give them to friends. Do you think I will get figs this year?
