spider mites already

I've been weeding in my flower bed the last couple of days and had noticed that one of my well established siberian irises was taking forever to come up; I thought it was odd, because there was pretty much 0 chance it winter killed. So today I looked at it more closely, it is coming up, but slowly. There seemed to be quite a bit of fine webbing on it. And after picking away for a few minutes I looked at my fingers; there was orangey stuff on them(squished mites I think)

Yuck. Should I try to control these, or am I better off digging out the plant and getting rid of it(sealed back to the dump I guess, or burn it) before it spreads to any more of my perennials? I'm terrified of an infestation, my sister had one another year and had a terrible time controling it after it got out of hand.

You could try a mild soap solution in a spray bottle. I think you should spray a bit into the soil around the base of the plant as well. It has been very dry this year so it doesn't surprise me that you have spider mites.

I ended up pulling out the plants that were the most infested and taking them to the dump in a garbage bag, and then spraying a couple of daylilies that had some but not a lot. I hate to use insecticide, but I'm so paranoid about spider mites spreading everywhere that I'll do pretty much anything to get rid of them. Looks like all the adults are dead, I imagine I'll have to spray again in a few days to get anything new that hatched.
