Could you help me ID a garden plant?

Hi fellow garden lovers!

I'm normally on the Kitchen Table, but I wanted to ask you a plant ID question.

My friend in Georgia has this plant in her garden. She was given the seedling as a "mystery."

I thought it might be a hollyhock or a hibiscus? You can see the swirled petals in the red bud.

What do you think it is?

Looks like a Rose of Sharon to me. They grow like weeds but are actually big shrubs.

aka Hibiscus syriacus. If you google Rose of Sharon there's an outside chance you might turn up UK sites in which case that name will refer to Hypericum calycinum, a type of St John's Wort. So best to double check that it's Hibiscus info you've found.
