First time Fig Grower

socalliegalMay 13, 2010

I would like to know what is in laymans terms a simple soil mixure for fig. I would like to grow it in a container.

Please let me know I was thinking of:

  1. Sand

  2. Composte

  3. Garden soil

I know there is more

Oh I have tried to post this question, but as this website states many posts disapeared.

Look for Al's or Dr Talpas mixture. Many have reported good results with it. I use the ultimate potting mix.

If you're up for learning what makes a good (and bad) container medium, you can read about it here. There are a couple of recipes there that offer good starting points, too.

FWIW, if you make aeration your focus, and the property around which you build your soils, or at least the property you keep foremost in your mind when you select a soil, you can't go far wrong ..... all explained in the thread I linked you to above.

I have a 1 year old fig tree in the gritty mix. It's growing fast and has nice green foliage. I fertilize every Saturday with a 1/4 strength foliage pro.
