Saw this Thujopsis at Westonbirt labled as

Thujopsis dolabrata var hondai with peculiar

foliage it could be a new form not var hondai.

Im very interested to see what you folks think.

If it is labeled, Thujopsis dolabrata var hondai, what are the characteristics about it that makes you think it is something different?

Dave and Euan,
The var. hondai is the northern form of the species Thujopsis dolabrata and does have a darker green foliage and doesn't have such a gracefull habit as the one at the pics.

Euan, did you noticed that the upper part from your specimen is growing much stronger then the under part?
The under part grows pretty gracefull while the upper part is growing like the "normal" one...

about that.

Euan, is the one at Westonbirt a seedling?
If so, then the underpart is still juvenile foliage indeed.
The interesting thing about that if you'll take cuttings from this underpart, the juvenile foliage will remain :0)
In other words, get it propagated and keep us informed!

Edwin,

What are your long term plans for that one before it gets to large to move it?

Dave, my Pinetum is now under a big construction.
The pic I showed is from the old situation last year.
A lot of "normal" one's are removed and the more rare one's will fill up the empty spaces.
The Thujopsis dol. var. hondai went to another part of my Pinetum were it can grow free and happy :0)
