Sauromatum Venosum

loufloralcityz9January 21, 2011

I bought some Blue Walking Iris plants on eBay and the Sauromatum Venosum was a 'free bonus' they threw in the package.

After Googling it I find out it is called a "Voodoo Plant" with very strange characteristics... hence it's common name.

I'm wondering if anybody else has grown this since it is rated Zone 6 to 11 hardiness & will naturalize over time in our zones.

Height: 1 to 3 feet

Width: 1 to 2-1/2 feet

Perennial: awesome foliage display (medium green leaves)

Flower: single, unusual, exotic, with greens & purples

Tolerances: heat & humidity, shade to part shade/part sun

PH Range: 5 to 7

Soil: Sandy loam to Clay loam

Water range: Dry to Moist

I really don't know what the grown plant looks like yet because right now it is a dormant corm the size of an egg that they put in the package with the walking iris, so that is why I was asking if anybody else has grown it before.

The information I typed for it came from a paper they put in the package.

Hey Lou,

Hope you like *stench*. I've been growing these for a few
years now, and when they bloom, they smell very bad!

I'm near San Jose, CA (I think it's zone 9), and mine
seem to bloom only every-other year, for only a day.

Good luck!

Bill

The Voodoo Lily is in the Amorphophallus spp..
This link is filled with colorful photos of bulbs.
The Voodoo lily is the last slide and has a nice photo of the flower.
