Morning glories showing up a different color?

nancyjane_gardener(Zone 8ish North of San Francisco in the "real" wine country)June 16, 2011

My sister has morning glories and calls them a weed, so I've been careful to not grow them in the vege area.

She gave me a bunch of starts from her garden that were a deep purple.

When they grew in my area, they came out pure white with an occasional purple one mixed in!

Do MGs turn colors as hydrangeas do, depending on the soil PH etc?

I' SURE that we took starts from the area of her garden that had the deep purple flowers!

White's OK, but I LOVE the purple!

Hi NancyJane..I am not a morning glory expert but I suspect the are pollinating and crossing and there is a recessive white trait that is showing up in the crosses. To get pure purple you would need to start with the right seed maybe it was a F1 hybrid. Some self sow true and some don't and these lovely purples must not. If anyone else has specific experience or knowledge please help or correct me.
