black madeira not!

mastino(7)June 22, 2010

I received BLACK MADEIRA cuttings in a swap (from 2 sources) & now after all this time waiting it turns out they (at least the cutting I kept) is NOT a BLACK MADEIRA because the figs dont resemble it in the least. I unfortunately shared some of those cuttings with other fig enthusiasts :( I cant remember who you are so if you received these cuttings from me, Im very VERY sorry!

Don't be too hard on yourself mastino. This happens a lot...even with commercial nurserys. You showed a lot of class by posting the error.

Yep! Dave and I got hoodwinked by a commercial nursery, but it turned out really well! So what is the fig you have? Just a mystery fig at the moment?

Dave, mine has 20 figs on it and more are forming!!

Cool. Not many figs on mine, Suzi. Both trees are doing well though.

I must admit, I have pinched every time there were 5 leaves, now I have a lot of branches, and a lot of figs.

I hope it was the same guy who sent cuttings to be sold by Encanto Farms.

Desertdance, could you tell me more about pinching at 5 leaves? My figs (in pots) grow tall with too much stick between leaves, and not much fruit :-(

Thanks, Ashita

Ashita,

I was new to figs last year, and I read the thread posted below, and it taught me to pinch. Pinching is easy. When you see 5 leaves, pinch the newest teeniest one, and the tree will stop that branch, and branch out sometimes sending branches out at various places along the branch you pinched, and sometimes splitting the end into 2 or 3 new branches. Some of these will have figs on them.

Suzi, Thank you for pointing me to that. I shall go out tomorrow and pinch. I have nothing to lose! No baby figs at all yet!
