Anyone know what this is?

marciaz3 Tropical 3 Northwestern OntarioJuly 8, 2012

I found this at one of the local nurseries. It had no tags and they didn't know what it is. One woman said ice plant but it's not even close to the mesenbryanthemums that i know!

This is the flower:

This is the rest of the plant:

It's hard to see - it's quite tall and has drooping buds.

Interesting looking plant. Looks like a type of anemone to me. :)

The people at the nursery said it was "rogue seed" from their suppliers. Yes, the flower looks anenome-ish, but do they get that tall? The leaves are sort of succulent too. I'm anxious to see more blooms on it!

Yeah, it looks like a succulent. Anemones do get quite tall but it doesn't really fit the leaf discription, hey?

So far i've only seen it with the one flower. It would be gorgeous if a bunch bloomed at once!

I don't know what it is, but it's sure got a pretty bloom.

I'm liking the blooms to the right of it, too.

What are they?

In case Marcia doesn't come back right away, the flowers to the right are pansies. I love all pansies, but especially those colors.

Hello Marcia,
your plant belong to the purslane family. Its name is Cisanthe grandiflora or Calandrinia grandiflora .

Sorry - was away for a few days. Thanks for the ID, Michel (Merci!) I'll let the nursery people know. :) And yes, i'll see if i can get some seed! (Terrance, i'll trade you for a rose! LOL)

Lynn, yes those are pansies. They're in Darius' little garden, and these and some other pink ones overwintered. What is neat is that the flowers the fairy is carrying are almost the same, and they light up at night and the colour is really similar.

It reminds me of a Lewisia. I have not had any luck growing them.

I was looking for something else here and found this thread. I did get some seed from this plant and when i start playing with seeds again, probably after Christmas sometime, i'll see if they're viable. Terry, if you want some, let me know!
