Spruce evolves into Pine?

SaraCAOctober 15, 2011

Have a spruce tree 18" tall in pot that was a "living Christmas tree" - the tree is now morphing from spruce tree to a pine tree. It has 3" pine needles on some branches and the main leader morphs into a pine with all 3" pine needles.

How do I stop the pine growth?

Is this the result of grafting?

Umm. Doesn't happen.

Please post a picture. If you need help with that, here it is:

Sounds like a case of juvenile Stone Pine (Pinus pinea) foliage being replaced by mature foliage.
Note the top part of the plant in the linked photo...

Agreed. It was never a spruce, but just juvenile needles on a pine.

Ditto to Stone Pine.

You can keep them permanently juvenile by growing them as bonsai with frequent pruning. It's a lot of hard work, though.
