Your experiences with dwarf-ish figs

girlbug2(z9/10, Sunset zone 24)July 23, 2010

I want to plant a small fig in my front yard. Ideally I'd like a green/yellow variety, and one that can be easily maintained at @6 feet (due to very limited space). Does this even exist?

I do have rooted cuttings of Latarulla and Peter's Honey in small pots. Are either one of these considered dwarfs or semidwarfs? How big will they typically get in-ground?

All figs trees can be trimmed down to a small size.

I had a dwarf fig once but I though it was Dopey. Being around it made be Sneezy but I did not see the Doc because I'm kinda Bashful. Turns out my wife was allergic too and she got Grumpy at me and took some meds which made her very Sleepy.

We have all heard the song about dwarves working and working. Hi ho! Hi ho! and all but the tree was not working for us so I got rid of it.

What you need to consider is that by making the tree into a dwarf will affect the production. So you need to get a tree that is a heavy producer that will bear enough figs to make it worthwhile. Check out Silvia's tree in this link. With just a little more growing and pruning it will fill out beautifully.

Vivian, we can't put links here so you need to copy and paste it into the address bar. That is Sylvia's tree from her post.

Petite Nigra is touted as a natural dwarf fig?
It is a good dark fig very similar to VdB.
I had grown mine both in pots and observed
that there is not much difference in growth.

I do have (also a dark potted) fig that seem
to grow horizontally - the Wuhan (from China).

Hi,

Thanks for the link. I hadn't realized it was the one y'all were talking about.

That's a beautiful little tree and I'm so glad she didn't cut it down. Whew!
