HELP -- new fig tree dying, leaves burnt?

edamatAugust 16, 2010

I bought a 2 ft tall celeste fig 3 days ago and replanted it in a container pot (~3 gallons). It was fine the first day, but the next day the leaves started to curl. Today the leaves look burnt... crispy dry and browning. Only a few of the new leaves are ok.

I don't know if it's over or underwatering... I didn't water the plant the first day since it had already been soaked at the nursery... I gave it like a cup of water the 2nd day when the leaves started to curl to see if it would perk up... but it didn't. I stuck a stick in and the soil doesn't seem too soaked (at least the first 5 inches deep)

I did a search and I think it was showing signs of mosaic disease when I bought it.... I don't know if I'm overwatering? or if it's a disease.

This is my first time with a fig plant and I'd really appreciate help/advice. I'm also wondering about the worst case scenario: all the leaves dropping... what should I do then to make it recover?

Water it thoroughly till it runs out the bottom of the pot, and put it in the shade till it shows signs of recovery. FMV is not the issue. Do not fertilize till it shows signs of recovery.
