I thought it was a bug's nest

I found a small tan thing in the yard today. It was not much bigger than a walnut. It is fully enclosed with a small stem on it. I just realized that it is an old hummingbird's nest with an egg still sealed up inside. It rattled when I picked it up. Do you think there is any chance for this to hatch? The hummers left in October.

No, no chance once any egg gets cold. I'd sure love to see what it looks like though, never seen one. Any chance you can post a picture?

I wish I could. My hubby downloaded some pictures into my computer and I can't figure out how to retrieve them. It doesn't look anything like a regular bird's nest. They make it with spider webs so it will expand as the little hummers grow. I kinda thought it was a goner. I will take it to the Ag Center for show and tell. This the second one we have found below our oak trees. Actually the first one my hubby found still attached to the oak tree about 6 feet up. It was empty. I lost that one. It's out under the tree where I thought I laid it down. It is the same color as the dried leaves of the oak tree.

Check out Birds and Blooms. They show pictures of the nests sometimes.
