How tall will a fig tree grow?

wild_foragerAugust 31, 2007

The front of my home faces southeast, a good place to plant a fig. However, the front yard is shaded by my neighbors flowering cherry. If I were to plant a fig in almost full shade, how long would it take with pruning to keep it straight, to grow to a height of 15 or 20 feet? Or would it do so at all? I plan in the future to prune the flowering cherry. Is this a rediculous idea? Maybe I just love figs too much to give up.

In full sun, it could be 20 feet tall in 3-4 years, if pushed with fertilizer, but for a tree shape, that would probably produce a weak tree, so a slower approach would be better. However, figs are not shade loving plants, so try to find a full sun location.
