yellow jacks- all over figs,

marcantonioAugust 31, 2012

hi,

i solved the problem of the birds with netting, now it seems the minute a fig reaches the point of ripeness the yellow jacks devour it. and they sworm -so far i havent gotten stung-but is there any way to deter these pests. they actually hollow out the figs.

catch them with a yellow jacket trap. I've heard you can make them out of 2 litter bottles so you may want to google search "diy yellow jacket trap" and see what comes up. what type of figs do you have? I've also heard open eye varieties attract many fig eating insects so you might want to try a closed eye variety. I have 3 closed eye figs if you want to trade a few cuttings shoot me an email. We have a ton of yellow jackets in south Carolina but the ants do more damage to my open eye cultivars here. good luck and I hope you stay stung free:)
